Chapter History
Gamma Phi Chapter was established officially at the University of Georgia, in Athens, May 23, 1951. Frank H. Eby, Grand Regent, installed the chapter and demonstrated the Ritual of Initiation in ceremonies which were held in the Parish House of the Episcopal Church in Athens. D.O. Pearce, Jr., Regent of Gamma Phi Chapter accepted the charter. The installation of the chapter was an important part of the Sesquicentennial Pharmacy Day exercises at the University of Georgia during which time laboratories were dedicated and many alumni participated in the Third Annual Student-Faculty-Alumni Day Dinner
Organization of Gamma Phi Chapter was made possible by the fine work of Brother Woodrow Byrum (Columbus Graduate), a faculty member who had the assistance of Dean Kenneth L. Waters and students (Charter Members) D.O. Pearce, Don Hall and Ray D. Webb. Dr. Durward En-trek in, former member of the Executive Committee, served as Grand Council Deputy of Gamma Phi from 1965 to 1968. Dr. Anthony C. Capomacchia served as the chapter Grand Council Deputy from 1977 to 1992 and has been the leading force behind the chapter's success.
The current chapter house, acquired in 1972 is a tri-level five bedroom house with a large front chapter room and a huge back deck and is located at 1880 South Lumpkin Street. Prior to 1972 the chapter house was located on Waddell Street. Gamma Phi Chapter is the only Kappa Psi collegiate chapter to have won the National Scholarship May Award for three consecutive years, in 1965, 1966, and 1967. Involvement in intramural sports has always been a source of great pride for Gamma Phi with championship trophies in basketball, baseball, football, bowling, golf, and softball. In 1992 Brother Brian Macomson organized the most successful blood drive in recent memory and the chapter's 35 actives participated in the Adopt-A-Highway program. The pledge class completed some much needed painting at the house.
